The third grade crew is an enthusiastic, compassionate, and bright bunch. There are 24 of us on this learning journey together, and we have a blast every day! Our school is an EL Education school; we are part of a larger network of schools across the nation that work to empower students to become both effective learners and ethical people.
We achieve this empowerment in a variety of ways by fostering a sense of belonging (highlighted in the EL motto "we are crew, not passengers"), by guiding students out into the world on fieldwork, and by diving deeply into an expedition project that culminates in a high-quality product.
This year, we are studying the Portland Bridges. Our favorite fieldwork so far has been a trip to downtown Portland on a bridge tour! We had the opportunity to see the Steel Bridge lift up for a tugboat -- we felt so lucky.
Outside of expedition, we enjoy reading to ourselves and one another, doing hands-on math activities and playing games to enhance our learning, strengthening our community through team building games, and figuring out how we can make our world a better place for everyone.
My Project
Sometimes school is messy! We do coloring, painting, writing, gluing, and so many more things to learn in 3rd grade. At the end of the day, we have three class jobs dedicated just to wiping down desks. Currently, we use disinfectant wipes to clean our desks but that uses up a lot of materials and creates a lot of waste. I want to find a more sustainable way to clean the learning areas for students. Your donation to this project will help get the supplies to do just that. We will use cloths with environmentally friendly all purpose cleaner to wipe down our desks. That way, we will create less waste than using disinfectant wipes.
