Students in several environmental science classes have been learning about the importance of protecting our environment against pollution, and have expressed interest in cleaning areas near the school. This is a communal space where students sometimes eat lunch, hang out before/after school and participate in class activities. This space is also used by community members. Unfortunately, we have no safe supplies to help students complete their goal. This project seeks to engage students in hands-on activities that not only beautify their local environments, but also help to foster a lifelong commitment to environmental responsibility and community service.
Providing supplies, including grabbers, pokers, gloves, and trash bags, will allow students to have the tools they need to safely clean up their community.
These materials will allow students to become active participants in the solution that they see as necessary. By engaging in hands-on clean-up activities, they will develop a sense of pride and responsibility for their community and their environment. Students have already identified a problem, and lack the resources and organization to take action. By providing the necessary tools and support, this project will enable students to make a tangible difference in their communities.
