The students in my class are a wonderful group of children. They love to learn new things and to experience new opportunities. My students face barriers that can potentially hinder their educational progress. Many of them come from high-poverty families. There are students of every racial background in our school. Some of the students are learning to speak English at school and speak other languages at home. Some of them are from other countries such as Honduras, Mexico, Somalia, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. Others have special needs.
Our school is a second home for many of the children.
It is where they feel safe and loved and know that they can try new things.
Education is very important to the families at our school. They chose our school, a neighborhood charter school, because of its diversity, high standards for behavior, and excellent instruction. Our school is very much a community. There are about 400 students in our school in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. All of the children in our school come from the local historic urban neighborhood.
My Project
Our school is a beautiful historic building. There are wonderful high ceilings, and large windows for natural light and fresh air. There is also, however, no sink in the classroom. In order for the students to wash their hands before snack time or lunch or after blowing their noses or doing an art project, they have to leave the classroom and go down the hall to the restrooms to wash their hands. This often takes quite a while.
Having a portable sink and hand soap in the classroom would ensure that the children could wash their hands as needed, without it being a disruption.
This would lead to the students being able to do it more often and for me, the teacher, to be able to more easily instruct them on proper hand washing. It would also make keeping the classroom clean much easier.
Having a classroom sink and soap will enable the children to exercise proper hygiene, thus keeping them healthy and happily at school.
