Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our School is located in a high poverty area in Chicago with 90% of the students receiving free breakfast and lunch. Many of the children are learning English as a second language. Our inclusive preschool classroom consists of both general education and diverse learners. We have a total 40 students enrolled in both the AM and PM sessions. Our special needs children have labels which include autism and developmental delays. Several of the students in both sessions receive speech and language services, social work and occupational therapy.

Our young learners are enthusiastic, energetic, and eager to learn!

They all arrive at school with bright smiles that warm hearts. Many are quick to share a hug or a story with us. The students love to be in school and tell us how disappointed they are when they miss school due to sickness. We are creating life-long learners in our class and want all of our students attending regularly.

My Project

Healthy students equals good attendance. Research indicates that absenteeism in preschool negatively impacts academic achievement, future attendance patterns, truancy and dropout rates in future grades. We need to make certain that we, as educators, do everything possible to help form good attendance patterns early on. One way to work towards this is to limit the germs in the learning environment.

"Clean as a Whistle".

Besides creating a warm, nurturing, safe and stimulating classroom, we need to ensure that our learning environment is as clean as possible. Research indicates that attendance patterns are formed in the early years of formal education. Healthy students correlate to consistent attendance which results in more learning. We use effective cleaning products often to fend off germs in our classroom. We use wipes and disinfectant to clean furniture and materials before and after each session of children. This certainly is one way to ensure our youngest learners are happy, healthy and in school!
