Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students always come in with a smile. They are eager to participate in our small literacy group because they know that they will get much needed, and deserved, attention. Unfortunately, some of them don't have someone to read to them or with them at home. Some do, but others have parents that do not speak English and cannot help. Others are raised by family members other than their parents, and often are just too busy to help. All of my students receive a free breakfast at school each morning and free lunch every day. They are appreciative of the fun things we do in class and love to share with us the things they do outside of class. Our school is old, but very clean and always decorated with the work of the students. Their art work lines the hallways and their classwork is outside all the classrooms. Our school may be in the city and we may hear sirens throughout the day, but within our classes, we hear laughter, and the students love to learn and enjoy coming to school each day.
My Project
Looking good makes a child feel good and sometimes our children come to school in the same clothes every day of the week. Having a nice, new clean uniform to start the day can make all the difference for a student. By providing our students with something as simple as a school uniform, we are providing them with the start they need for a successful school year. Uniforms are a requirement in our district, but many families cannot afford more than one uniform, so the student must wear the same set of clothes every day because there's not time to wash and dry it each day after school. We can provide the kids with uniforms so they can feel good about themselves by putting on a fresh set of clothes each morning. The paper is an expensive supply that takes away from money we could be using for better things for our students. Unfortunately, it is a necessity as it is the main form of communication with our parents. We are a ways from becoming a paper free school. We would much rather spend our budget on our kids!
