Students struggle daily to get through the day without any issues. Some of our students come from situations they cannot help. Sometimes they are responsible for younger siblings, or helping take care of a sick family member, or just trying to get themselves to school without help. These are the students I want to help feel comfortable, safe and healthy so they can make it through their day without stress.
My students don't act like they don't have everything that they need as they show pride in everything they do.
Our school is located in a large urban school district in a low-income area. The school community is so special because the staff and students try their best to make our school a place where they can feel safe, grow and learn regardless of the struggles beyond our walls. Our students are the best students in our city.
It's hard to stay healthy when 30 of us are crammed into a small space. I try my best to keep our environment clean and free of germ every day. We wipe down desks, use sanitizer and tissues to keep those germs away. Sometimes this gets expensive and I run out of supplies. These supplies would give us some back up for the cold and flu season, which will be here before we know it.
My classroom becomes a germ box certain times of year.
Keeping it clean is not the only way I try to keep my students healthy. I also like to keep healthy snacks on hand for the days my students just didn't get to eat before school. Many of them are responsible for younger siblings or sometimes just themselves and are too busy running out the door to grab something healthy. I would much rather have a healthy choice in my room than have them stop at the corner store and get junk. Also, sometimes they are just hungry and need a pick me up in the afternoon. It's very hard to concentrate when you are hungry.
I know these items will make our classroom a cleaner and healthier environment so our class can concentrate on the end goal of being successful students.
