Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small public middle school serving roughly 370 students in our neighborhood of Oakland, CA. We are a small school by design, serving families within the community as well as students from throughout Oakland. The student body is about 87% Latino, and 56% of our students are English Learners. In addition, 96% of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch and seven percent of our students are identified as needing special education services.
Our school culture is unique because it's very positive, encouraging, and uplifting.
My Project
My students are all newcomers, meaning that they are learning English as they have arrived in the U.S. within the last three years.
We have a wonderful time learning together with the community we've built in my classroom, but I end up spending A LOT out of pocket to keep it nice and clean.
If we had a broom and mini vacuum, we wouldn't have to rely solely on the cleaning personnel.
I am constantly having to purchase things like soap, cleaning spray, and other supplies to keep our classroom clean. More than just a clean classroom, I would like to provide an enjoyable environment with shelves for organizing materials and a beautiful plant to bring nature inside our classroom!
In addition, students often ask for a snack. If they missed breakfast, lunch wasn't enough, or they're staying in after school until 6pm - it is understandable, but very expensive to keep up with the demand.
Please help me provide a clean, healthy, and enjoyable learning environment for my students.
