We are a diverse first grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 24 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
There are 25 good reasons to put an air purifier in my classroom- the students themselves. A main benefit of an air filter/purifier is that it would cut down on dust. Our building is nearly 100 years old, and it produces and traps a great deal of dust as well as mold, which leads to increased student and staff illness, as well as damaging computer and other equipment. The air purifier would also cut down on allergens. In a time when an ever-increasing number of students are diagnosed with asthma or allergies, cutting down on pollen, molds, and other airborne allergens would allow those children to breathe a little bit easier. Aside from dust and other allergens, air purifiers eliminate airborne bacteria, germs, and viruses that circulate in the classroom. This would mean fewer sick students, teachers, and other school employees, as well as cut down on disease agents brought home by students and transmitted to family members. A final benefit of an air purifier is that it would neutralize odors. On warm days, this feature will be greatly appreciated.
