My Students

I teach second grade in a dual language classroom. Half of the students' days are spent in English and the other half involves learning language and content in Chinese.

I love that my students are kind and respectful to each other.

Second graders are excited to read and discuss quality materials with great graphics and interesting text. As their expressive vocabulary races to catch up with their receptive vocabulary, my students love the freedom to express themselves verbally during the English portion of their day. It is important that these great students have opportunities to interact in productive ways about things that matter to them. It is so fun to share their excitement about science and what they are discovering about the world around them.

School has become very important to many of my students. Some of the connections that they previously have had in the community have been put on hold. We work hard to have a kind, nurturing classroom where all feel needed and supported.

My Project

I am asking for a high quality air purifier for my classroom. It is important to do our best to keep all the students as safe as we possibly can. Clean air is a must. This air purifier will also help with allergies, pollen, and dust in the classroom. This will benefit students all year long, not only during times of high virus transmission.

The beautiful pencils and art materials will help my students connect to others, express themselves, and feel the satisfaction of craftsmanship as they create unique letters and cards.

Writing is one of the skills impacted during the pandemic. In our classroom, students are expected to write every day. One way to deal with some of the isolation that students may be feeling is to have them write to others. Often we reach out to someone in our school and community with an illustrated card filled with gratitude or support. This is a great way to give students an opportunity make a difference within their own sphere of influence. In addition, creating art helps build self-regulation and resilience.
