Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life." - Pablo Picasso
Everyday life can become a struggle for anyone and for many of my students, their current reality is not always the best place to be.
Therefore it is my goal to provide them with the ability to problem solve and think creatively so they are able to change their reality. Our population is comprised of 58% of students that do not originally speak English. This includes many Spanish speaking families, but also refugee families from the Middle East. Additionally roughly 80% of our school qualifies for free and reduced lunch.
Despite the socioeconomic truths facing theses students, they are always smiling with a kind word on their tongues and their families are supportive and full of love, but love does not fund a classroom alone.
My Project
Although I have access to a kiln and clay, I do not have any glaze to truly bring their clay creations to life. Glaze, as opposed to paint, is safe, non-toxic, provides relatively easy clean up, and results in a product that is beautifully colored that will last forever.
Building in clay really allows students to think and problem solve in a three dimensional way.
In art class, many times we are restricted to flat creations constructed simply with pen or paint and paper. Three dimensional construction helps to build a different set of life long skills, such as spacial reasoning and considering multiple points of view. I hope to provide this tactile, three dimensional learning experience with the help of this project.
