My students need more air-dry clay! Our art room doesn't have a kiln, so air-dry clay is one of the only opportunities for sculpture.

My Students
Our students are a hard-working, capable, and beautifully diverse group of kids! They come from all sorts of backgrounds, mainly immigrant families, and manage to excel in every academic and social area.
Our art classroom is a safe place for students to create, relax, and have truly meaningful discussions about topics from community and family to sustainability and stereotypes.
You would not believe the insightful things that come out of these kids' mouths.
With over 300 students, I strive to make each and every student feel loved and intelligent. They overcome a variety of obstacles on a daily basis just to be able to sit in a classroom, so it is important that we make the most of their time with us.
My Project
My students' favorite unit is almost always clay! They love to get messy and get their hands busy, rolling and smushing, slamming it on the table, and manipulating it with tools.
The only problem is, we go through 25 pounds of clay so fast!
Usually, a 25 pound box of clay will be used for two different classes of kids. I have 13 different classes! Essentially, we need more air dry clay.
Different grade levels do all kinds of things with clay. In third grade, we made cupcake sculptures inspired by artist Wayne Thiebaud. In 4th grade, we made pottery inspired by Pueblo Native Americans. In 5th grade, each student made individual countries and put them together like a puzzle to make a continent.
Now, in 2nd grade, I want to make flower pots! They are learning about the life cycle of a plant in science class and even growing their own. I thought it would be fun if they could grow their own plants in pots that they created, connecting science and art.
