My little artists have been bouncing around between three different art teachers in the past three years! I am trying to establish a high-quality, social-emotionally driven art curriculum that will allow them to see art as a subject equally valid to their core classes. With a high population of English Language Learners, it is critical that we establish art literacy as part of their enormous repertoire of words! Sketchbooks would allow our little artists to not only keep track of art vocabulary, but also allow them to see their enormous growth throughout the school year and in years to come. Each unit of my curriculum for grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 uses sketchbooks. If this project is not funded, we will be making them out of stapled paper. On day one of each unit, students will use the sketchbooks for something called a "Materials Exploration." They are given an assignment or topic and get to explore the different materials they could use for that unit. They will also receive vocabulary reference handouts to glue into their sketchbooks. On days 3 and 4 of the unit, the little artists will use their sketchbooks for self-assessment and peer assessment, practicing ELA skills in writing about specific art concepts. Without these sketchbooks, I fear that many of our students will be missing out on a wonderfully integrated ELA and Art experience.
