Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the art teacher at an elementary school in a high poverty neighborhood with a lot of gang activity. Many of my students never even leave the neighborhood. I have found that art is often the only time of the day that many of them feel successful. They get very excited to work in clay; they wish they could do it all year round! I really love my job when I see kids excited to learn and want to push themselves.

This will be the first clay project for my 1st graders. They have been watching the older students make projects and keep asking “When do we get to work with clay dough?” They are more willing to take risks in all media when they feel empowered in clay. Also, I can make curriculum connections and expose students to the unique clay sculpture of Mexico.

I try to do clay with all of my classes, but my budget is pretty tight this year. This will allow my 1st grade students to each make and paint a clay bird. They have been learning all about animals in science, and this will culminate in an exhibit of their unit. I will show them clay animal sculptures from Mexico, focusing on bird sculptures.

This project allows for my students to learn about clay sculpture vocabulary, tools and processes, and encourages self-expression. Students will have a finished product that they can display and be proud of, allowing for a sense of achievement and self-worth.
