Knowledge of geography and maps is a dying skill in public schools today! Many of my students can not locate their own home state on a map of the United States. Despite our new growing dependence on GPS, it is essential to have a general understanding of basic geography!
My wonderful fourth grade students attend a charter school in a Midwest, urban community.
The large majority of my students (approximately 96%) qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite the hardships they face at home and in their community, they are some of the most energetic and bright students you will meet! They have an unquenchable curiosity and desire to discover!
These maps and geography activities will give my students the tools to become "world travelers." While they won't be flying in a jet to visit foreign places, they will be able to have the world at their fingertips in the classroom! These resources will enable me to expand on their knowledge of different places, people, cultures, and ways of life. With these resources we will first review basic geography skills like coordinates, landforms, continents, and oceans. From there we will explore the ancient Chinese dynasty, the middle ages of Europe, and the American Revolution! We will be able to discuss and learn about current world events. My students will become active citizens of the United States as well as the world.
So many of us were blessed as children to travel with friends and family to new cities, states, and even countries.
Those experiences helped shape how we interact with people, places, and environments today. My students do not have access to these hands-on experiences. They rely on their school and teacher to be their passport to the world! These maps and resources will guide us in exploration and learning! Someday their education will enable them to travel beyond the classroom and into the world!
