Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our 7th grade classroom, we want students to learn how science can enrich their lives and those around them. Within our curriculum we talk about the movement of nutrients from a seed all the way through decomposition and the importance of that cycle. Students also connect this to our human body unit and how carbon dioxide and oxygen cycles through respiration and photosynthesis. Growing plants and having students be able to take them home and eat them give them a tangible connection to the curriculum and a chance to continue learning more at home. Having different seed options (tomatoes, peppers, carrots, lettuce and herbs) will give students a chance to explore different growth cycles and the different soil, sunlight, and water needs.

With these supplies, student will be able to experience growing their own food and share it with their friends and family.

Currently, we use one vertical grow tower in each of our 7th grade science classroom. We are limited to what we can produce, but both students and staff are so excited when they see students going home with bags of lettuce and herbs. Seeing students excited to bring food home to their families makes us want to increase the number of students that we can reach. By having the seed starter pots and trays, we can germinate and grow more vegetables to support more students and their families.
