My Students

Can you count to ten in Korean? Or Tigrinya? Basic skills like these are hard for anyone in a new language, and my students have been plunged into a world where they are not only expected to count, but do algebra, chemistry, biology, history, music, and art in their new language--English. They are resilient, courageous, and funny. TikTok is perhaps the new universal language.

I teach high school ESL.

It's easy for newcomers to feel dumb or embarrassed by their language skills, and these feelings can be exacerbated by learning materials that are geared toward young learners. Many basic language resources are written for K-2 students. My students need these basic vocabulary and language skills, but they also need to be treated as the young adults that they are. We are building a classroom of age-appropriate materials and resources that engage high-school aged learners with relevant, accessible content that respects their ability to think and express themselves. It's the fuel that will fire their ability to acquire language needed for the academic challenges of high school and beyond.

My Project

I work with multilingual students who are acquiring English, and these supplies will add to the array of materials I can use to match learning styles and incorporate all skills and domains--visual, audio, reading, and speaking. The games will also help to engage students in social-emotional learning as they work together in teams or simply have fun together. This is critical, especially for students from differing language backgrounds who may not be comfortable speaking to students from countries that do not share their language. The wordless books will provide a range of opportunities to incorporate many language skills.
