This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are diverse in economic status, but share the love of learning.

It amazes me how, at 6 years old, kids don't care about things like economic status. They all come to my classroom to learn, make friends, and feel safe expressing themselves. No matter what family or home circumstance a child has, when they walk into the front doors of my school, they know that they are valued just as much as any other kid. At the early childhood level, we struggle with literacy and math skills early on because a lot of the kids have not had the experiences that pave the way to become readers and mathematicians. We provide what is needed to circumvent the preparation gaps, and we turn kids into lifelong learners.

My Project

Technology is the wave of the future. In our classroom, we use technology everyday. Students participate in online reading and math programs. They also listen to literature together, while following along with a paper copy of the book. All of these are integral parts of their success in first grade. Our biggest struggle is with headphones. Even when used correctly, headphones wear out. If one computer is closed because of lack of headphones, it affects up to 10 students daily. A healthy supply of headphones for my classroom will increase the chances of success for the first graders I teach.

Sit Spots for the classroom gathering area will help my students stay focused and comfortable while listening to stories and lessons on the floor.
