My Students
Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least 6 different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
My students come to school every day excited to learn. They engage in a multitude of activities that help them to become better readers, writers, mathematicians, and thinkers. As 1st graders, my students use a lot of materials to support their learning.
While we strive to be as eco-friendly as possible, my students are reliant upon some consumable products for our lessons.
I am requesting copy paper, dry erase markers, and whiteboard erasers for my kids.
My students will use the paper for everything! They use papers during their Writing time when they are editing stories, during Math when they are solving complex equations and need to keep a record of their work, or when they are reading and want to capture the ideas from a book that the author discusses.
Sometimes, my students are practicing quick fluency skills that develop over time so they do not need to capture every moment of this learning. This is when they will use the markers and erasers to help demonstrate their knowledge in quick snapshots. Please consider helping us out so we can continue to do our best work!
