My class consists of 27 energetic fourth graders. A majority of my families struggle financially, and some of them have escaped the Lahaina fires without much at all. Fourth graders across the nation are struggling academically because they left school in kindergarten when Covid-19 made its debut into our community. My students have so much to learn and a lot of hard work ahead of them.
I have just started using class equity to promote positive social behaviors and teach financial literacy, and it has made an immediate impact on my students' behaviors.
Students perform classroom jobs to not only take care of our classroom environment, but also to support each other with organization, taking care of responsibilities, and just being a helpful and kind human. Students are paid every two weeks for performing their jobs, however they also pay rent for their desk and chair. Students can receive bonuses for a variety of reasons including performing their job well, being a helpful human, and participating in class discussions. Students can also be fined for not doing their jobs and misbehaviors. So, what's the motivation behind it all? They can use their money in our classroom store to buy snacks, balance balls, and more!
With the money they earn, students can buy rewards such as snacks, scented markers, lunch with the teacher, snack and movie time for the class, or extra recess. However, I need help stocking my store to keep these hard workers motivated. I'd like to stock the store with a variety of items that the students will enjoy. The store containing physical items consists of two levels of products, one at a low price point and one at a higher price point, to encourage students to save money.
