My students bring me so much joy by being who they are. It's a wonder and a joy to watch them grow, to overcome challenges, to put in maximum effort to succeed. A large percentage of my students come from homes that are struggling economically, and some are struggling with other heartbreaking situations. Yet, they come everyday with smiles on their faces and the determination to achieve, excel, and succeed. We are a family in my classroom, and the students hold and lift each other up with encouragement and an acceptance that helps each and every one of them shine. They are all so wonderfully different, and they know and understand that this is something to be valued. My school is a Title I school, with a large percentage of student population coming from low-income families. We do not have art teachers or funding for art supplies. The focus is a rigorous curriculum and test scores. Many of us struggle to educate the whole child, ensuring they do not just become a test score.
