I teach in a small, tight-knit school community in West Virginia where, despite incredible challenges at home, our students are thriving! My school is a Title I school where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch and where we do not expect them to provide many supplies on their own. I am humbled every day by the struggles and resilience represented in my students, and I am determined to make a difference in their lives.
I teach five classes of eighth grade science plus a HOTS class, a Design/Engineering class, and a Forensics class.
Although some of my students have internet and technology at home, many do not due to their socioeconomic situations. Some of them have limited exposure to life outside of our community, yet they are determined and have big dreams. Every day, I have the privilege of teaching students who work hard, persevere, and teach me to be a better person.
My Project
With the addition of these various office supplies, like Sharpies, pens, pencils, staplers, scissors, and much more, my students will have the necessary materials for classroom projects. Throughout the year, my students have many small projects that require design, building, and modeling of concepts they learn. These supplies will help stock our shelves with items that they can use to create and learn.
Stocking my classroom with needed office supplies creates a "makerspace" of materials that can be used for our projects!
My students will use these resources to do projects like our Tiny House Project, which requires building, planning, and designing a tiny house prototype. They also do a Mythbusters Project in which they have to present their findings to the class and need supplies to prepare for sharing their research. In addition, many of my students cannot afford to continuously refill their school supplies, so I always need to be prepared to help them out.
