Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 3rd grade at a high poverty school in a 50/50 Dual Language classroom. One half of my students are native English speakers. The other half are native Spanish speakers. They learn in English 1/2 of each day and in Spanish while they are with me the other 1/2 of their day. This allows for language role models in both languages.

My students are eager to improve their Spanish literacy skills and work very hard to speak, read, and write fluently in Spanish.

They have developed a tight community of learners and are able to support each other in the target language. It is amazing how much they grow.

My Project

My students enter third grade reading any where from beginning first to beginning fourth grade levels--IN SPANISH!! But growing readers need to have access at least 30 books over the course of the year. That is 30 per child--so they may choose between a variety of just-right books in a variety of genres.

We are requesting leveled books Spanish in a variety of genres.

This project will grow my Spanish classroom library so I can help grow Spanish readers. Currently, my library has some reading levels that only offer 12 books which must be shared between 5-6 students at a time. Not nearly enough for a hearty daily dose of reading.
