Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being eight years old again. Everything you read in school is boring. You see reading as a chore and avoid it at all costs.

This is where the majority of my students are right now.

They need to experience the joy of reading. My third grade class consists of English Language learners who currently consider reading anything but fun. Nothing but dissecting and analyzing short passages until they lose all meaning teaches children to view reading as pointless drudgery.

My Project

Enter Roald Dahl. Reading doesn't get more fun than a magic, giant peach piloted above the Atlantic Ocean by squabbling, oversize insects and a small, orphaned boy. Top that with another boy who meets pint-sized Oompa Loompas at a magic chocolate factory where all his dreams come true. Dahl continues to capture the imaginations of emergent readers better than any author in the genre. "James and the Giant Peach" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" are two of his finest works.

Packaged as entertainment, these two classics are actually a passport to improved reading ability.

Reading comprehension is critical for academic success in all subject areas and, consequently, success in life.
