What is a student to do when he or she looks up an unknown word in a dictionary only to discover that the definition includes part of the unknown word, and the examples given are of little or no help? This is the frustration that my English Language Development (ELD) students experience nearly every time they use a native speaker English language dictionary. I teach a three-period, multilevel (newcomers - early advanced) ELD class. I am also the school site ELD coordinator at Lincoln Middle School. We are in need of a class set (25) of intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) dictionaries for our English language learners. Currently, we have a set of native speaker paperback dictionaries, but most of the definitions given are not accessible to my students. It is critical for our students to receive comprehensible input. Unfortunately, native speaker dictionaries tend to confuse non-native English speakers who are trying to learn English. The Longman Dictionary of American English with Thesaurus and CD-ROM will greatly benefit our learners. The dictionaries will not only aid the students I directly teach, but they will provide reference support to the other 130 limited English proficient students I also meet and oversee. When the reference books are not being used by ELD/LEP students, they can be used by Resource Specialist and Special Needs students. After school, they can also be used by students attending study hall. Furthermore, the CDs can be checked out to students for use at home. Thank you for considering this proposal.
