Our classroom is a place where diversity is celebrated, where students learn not only the academics but also how to be a positive member of our world, and where children learn not only about the outside world but also about their inner being.
My kindergarteners are constantly fascinated by the world around them. My goal is to have a focal classroom meeting place that interests learners of all levels. I feel that a rug of the world and its continents invokes thought in all children, even adults as opposed to the typical alphabet rugs that many classrooms have - a large majority of my students already come in knowing most of their letter names and sounds. I want something that keeps my more advanced children wondering about the world as well as my slower students - that is why this continent rug is a great fit.
My future students will greatly benefit from having this rug in their learning environment because it will reinforce our social studies concepts as well as help better our reading skills. Having a rug like this in our room will keep the students thinking every time we transition from activity to activity because I will excuse my learners by their observations of the map ... for example, "If you are sitting on any part of the continent of Asia you may go get your snack." I am super excited to use the rug to reinforce and build on the previous knowledge my students have of the world.
Anything you can give will help give my students the opportunity to have a constant meeting place in our classroom that is well defined so that the children always know that when we are on the rug it means eyes are focused, ears are open and a special process is taking place called learning. Having a rug will help these learners focus on the process of learning which helps create a warm and rich environment in the classroom.
