Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of working with a diverse group of students who have the desire to learn, although they face many challenges. This is a group of 52 students; 25 girls and 27 boys. The group consists of Asians, Caucasians, and Hispanics. There are many learning levels and learning styles within the group.
All of the students derive from low-income families.
Many are from single-parent households. Three of the students are adopted. Many of the families are dysfunctional. This results in students needing a great deal of emotional support from their teachers as well as, a safe and comfortable school environment. Because they live with social problems, learning becomes a lower priority for them. Still, they attend school seeking the support.
The students are in a Dual Language Program, learning Spanish and English simultaneously. The school is located in the inner city. Financial funds to inner city schools are limited and continue to be cut. With such cuts, school personnel are eliminated and resources are limited. Students must continue to learn therefore, resources must be available. I have to provide what is needed to ensure the students learn.
My Project
It is important for us to have a large rug in the classroom so that morning meetings, read alouds, independent reading and center time can take place. We need a center area where as a whole class, we can meet. The rug will be big enough for students to fit on comfortable. During the instructional times, students will think, work and share with other peers. They will need the room the rug provides to turn and talk during whole group lessons without bumping into peers. During independent reading and center time, they will need the space to get comfortable in any way they choose to. The students will be more focused because of the confort of the rug.
We currently do not have a rug in the classroom.
It had to be removed because it was dirty and old. It will be amazing for my students to have a relaxing learning experience while in class and I know a classroom rug will provide this
