My students are the most amazing small humans on the planet. They are smart, kind, and hardworking third graders. We are a small school located in rural West Virginia and most of my students qualify as low income. Many have difficult home lives or situations that they come into my classroom every day dealing with. They sometimes struggle with creative learning and with communicating their needs and emotions effectively and appropriately and there just aren't enough counselors to go around. So teaching them to work well with others and to build healthy relationships with each other falls into the realm of my four walls.
The power of play aiding in building executive functions is more than a theory; it's a scientifically backed method that encourages children to focus on an activity, work through challenges, and engage in a learning process that leads to deeper learning.
Play is beneficial for students of all ages, enhancing cognitive development and essential skills, not simply the lower grades. In fact, according to research, incorporating play into the classroom can increase learning outcomes by up to 30%. I watch my students during choice time try to play make believe restaurant and other games with whatever they can find.
My hope is to give them items that will help their creative flow continue to grow and to give them opportunities in the classroom to step away from the every changing technology and step into a world that they can use their imaginations to form, a world where they can be happy and thriving. I hope that through our daily choice time they can grow socially, learn to problem solve, and cooperate with each other to become even greater people than they already are. These items will be key in helping with this goal!
