My Students

My math class is about "embracing the struggle" of learning. I try to instill a growth mindset with my students that enables them to become complex thinkers who aren't afraid to try something new that may be difficult at first. Embracing the struggle is embracing the learning process.

Our school serves Boston's Dorchester neighborhood.

Students come from mostly African-American descent and generally endure many struggles and obstacles just to get to school each day. Most of my students come from broken homes, live well below the poverty line, and have a myriad of learning and/or emotional disabilities. Education is often not their only focus, as many have to work to help support their families. My kids are amazing, through all of these perceived societal roadblocks they persevere. Nothing is more fulfilling than watching some of my students come into my class in the fall with serious math phobias, only to leave in the summer looking forward to next year's math class.

My Project

Our classroom was recently donated a very fancy iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil that has been a hotly contested resource for all of my students. We use this iPad to interact during classroom instruction. My students just love using the iPad and interacting with the lesson projected up at the front of the class, from the comfort of their seat. It also allows for a high level of interaction from a safe social distance.

This Magic Keyboard will continue to enhance the classroom experience.

Since students have already to using the iPad, the biggest complaint comes when its time to type. The Magic Keyboard will solve this problem!

Our class uses the iPad every day, it is passed around the class (along with hand sanitizer of course) allowing each student to have their chance at interacting with the days lesson and practice problems on the smart projector. Your donation towards this magic keyboard will go to enhance this experience by allowing students to also have a keyboard and touchpad that work with the iPad. This will help a lot with my Financial Literacy class that is far more concept based and less arithmetic based than my 10th Grade classes.
