Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! My students are hard-working, creative, and kind. They value a relaxed and fun-filled environment that allows them to keep anxiety levels down and work productivity up. They continue to impress me with their drive and determination despite any setbacks that their disabilities may present. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a group of learners that are excited and ready to learn!

My Project

My students often time have difficultly making friends due to unfortunate judgments about their disabilities made by my peers so I often find students in my room during our lunch period. I also find that some of my students don't always have something to eat, which might draw unwanted attention to them when classmates ask, "where's your lunch?"

At my school, more than 50% of students are Black, Latinx, and/or Native American, and more than 50% come from low-income households which means food is not always easily accessible.

I'd like to provide those students, and any other students who might need it, with a safe space that offers them snacks and even lunch if needed. I hope by meeting this need, I'll also be meeting a secondary need for friendships between students as they enjoy lunch in my room.

With the materials listed in my project, I'll set up a snack/lunch corner in my room which will have the storage drawers full of snacks, a mini-fridge with water bottles and fresh fruit (I will be shopping for that myself), and a microwave so they can heat up any food they might've brought from home. I also included cup of noodles and a small electric kettle to heat up the water in case a student needs a hot meal.

Most of these objects are often only available in a teacher's lounge and are only for staff. I want students to have access as well. All students will have access to this corner during their lunch period and will be welcome to hang out in my room.
