My students need 12 subscriptions to TIME for Kids and Scholastic News magazines. Autistic students struggle connecting print to life and real-life pictures aide in the process.

My Students

My day begins with a smile. Students go from station to station throughout the day. They work on skills in math, reading, science and social studies. They also work on life skills such as cleaning, dishes, laundry, self-help rest-room skills and job skills. Each day ends with a big smile.

My students are the students who love their teachers the most.

They are the students who are the kindest and the heart of the school. Not a day goes by where my students don't put a smile on the face of another teacher. My students give of themselves daily and give to me most of all. I am blessed and honored to work with such lovely individuals.

My Project

The reading materials will be used to teach students about real-life situations. Many students with autism and other learning disabilities struggle with making the connection between print and real-life. Our students will be reading this material and when possible creating the same situation in labs to make the connection between the real-life pictures in News to You and the real world. I know the students will love to look through the pages and then do the fun experiments that I will create from the newspaper articles.

These newspapers will make a difference because the students will have an opportunity to read a magazine/ newspaper that is high interest and that also helps them to connect to the world.

The students will also look cool carrying around a magazine that other students in the high school will want to look at. This will create conversation between students and facilitate a great year for the students in my class.
