Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I believe in my ability to do my best. I embrace challenges and mistakes because they help me learn. I am too focused on my hopes and dreams to waste today."
Everyday we start the day with our pledge, because we know we will be working hard listening, speaking, reading, and writing in all areas.
My school is a Title I school which means that as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, we receive financial assistance because a majority of our students are from low-income families.
This means many of my students have challenging lives, which oftentimes causes issues to arise in the classroom. One of the most important things for me as a teacher is to build a community of learners every year. This means everyone is accountable for each other- because we love and care for one another. We help each other when needed, we do a lot of listening, talking, hugging, resolving problems, managing our emotions, and most of all learning! My students often collaborate in cooperative groups, learning from each other as I facilitate. Additionally, I teach in a one-way dual language classroom. My students' first language is Spanish and they are learning English in school. The goal of our program is biliteracy, biculturalism and high levels of proficiency in both languages.
My Project
Rich, authentic, bilingual books are the key to building a love for reading in students who, more often than not, arrive at my 3rd grade classroom without it. I will use these books in my balanced literacy model for teaching reading: this means some of the literature will be for reading aloud to the class as part of my lessons of reading strategies, some will be enjoyed together as shared reading which builds fluency and gives students an opportunity to gradually assume more responsibility for the reading as their skill level and confidence increase, and finally (and best of all) the books will be in their hands: as they read with partners, as part of book clubs, and/or independently- they will interact with the texts themselves, practicing their reading strategies to build meaning. Additionally, we will use these books in writing class: we will study authors and their craft so that we can experiment with and emulate their strategies and skills in our own writing.
My classroom library needs a renovation- most of the books are quite old and have been donated by friends and colleagues retiring.
The books I have purchased myself are a small percentage and therefore not accessible for all my students at any given time. Multiple copies of these award winning books and highly rated authors will increase the interest in reading and will engage students to become self-motivated, confident readers, capable of reading in all content areas.
