My school is a Title I school which means that as part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, we receive financial assistance because a majority of our students are from low-income families. This means many of my students have challenging lives, which oftentimes causes issues to arise in the classroom. One of the most important things for me as a teacher is to build a community of learners every year. This means everyone is accountable for each other- because we love and care for one another. We help each other when needed, we do a lot of listening, talking, hugging, resolving problems, managing our emotions, and most of all learning! My students often collaborate in cooperative groups, learning from each other as I facilitate. Additionally, I teach in a one-way dual language classroom. My students' first language is Spanish and they are learning English in school. The goal of our program is biliteracy, biculturalism and high levels of proficiency in both languages.
