My Project

My students are 9th and 11th graders from a large suburban area, who come from a plethora of socioeconomic backgrounds. 2 classes of my 9th graders are co-taught with a Special Education teacher.

Research shows that giving kids time to independently read choice texts is the best way to increase literacy scores and foster a love of reading, so I am instituting a Silent Sustained Reading program.

I hope to encourage students to read books about people who are different from them, so they can begin to learn empathy towards all people, regardless of our diversity.

Students are only allowed to read paper books during SSR--no Kindles or iPad reading. I'll have weekly conversations with kids about what they're reading. I'll ask questions like: tell me about what you're reading, what do you like most about the book you're reading, and how has your book changed how you've looked at something in your life? My hope during these conversations is to build an interest in reading in an organic way: books are beautiful because we can talk to people about interesting things we're reading, and they shape how we see the world!
