Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Creating a diverse classroom library is essential but can be very expensive. As a pre-service teacher I have seen how a diverse selection of books can help students develop a love and appreciation of reading. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and lacked the confidence to read independently in the beginning of the school year. Once they learned how to pick books they were interested in I could see their feelings towards reading take a positive shift.

One of my biggest goals is to create a classroom library where any of my students can find a book that they are interested in to gain confidence and curiosity for reading.

My students have been obsessed with the Dog Man series. A lot of my students were not thrilled about literacy at the beginning of the school year but these books have changed their opinion on reading. Elephant and Piggie and Pete the Cat books are great when my students are learning to read on their own or struggling to read on grade level. It is so fun to see them grow confidence and curiosity for reading. The bookshelf will allow me to change up the book selection every week in order to showcase different types of books.

During dismissal I read book series to my students as a classroom management technique. My class can get a bit crazy at dismissal because they are excited to see their families but reading to them has helped everyone keep calm. They love when I read series like Magic Tree House because when we finish one book they get so excited to start the next. They have also shown interest in reading fantasy books which is why I think they would love the Roald Dahl collection as t
