Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently a fourth grade teacher who is moving to fifth grade next year. I will be moving into a new classroom previously inhabited by a woman who purchased over half of the classroom library with her own funds. She has taken the books that belong to her, leaving the room nearly bone dry. I will be servicing a wide range of learning styles (approximately 20 students from exceptional to gifted) and I need to beef up the classroom library. I am looking to bring in many different genre's as well as texts that stretch across the curriculum (math, science, social studies, etc.) and texts in Spanish.
Our school currently services 71% of low-income and 7% ESL children. Many of whom do not have access to a wide range of books and/or other resources. I want to ensure that each child in my classroom has the opportunity to experience things through books that they would not commonly experience without them. I would much rather take them on trips to give them new experiences, unfortunately I am unable to do so. To me, the next best thing is to take a trip in a book. The students will truly benefit from the wealth of knowledge they will gain through books and related activities.
