Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine your life without books; without that story that took you to a land you could never travel without those pages in your hands. Take away that book that turned you onto reading and encouraged you to read more. That is the life of my students.

I wish I could be that teacher that can sit here and say, "I have all of these students who are just itching to get their hands on some books," but I can't.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a student say," I don't like to read!" I wouldn't need to post this donation request. My students are looking for that one book that pushes them into the wonderful world of reading. I work in an inner city school, with over 90% of the population on free/reduced lunch. My students (9th grade) come from a variety of backgrounds, many consisting of single parent homes, grandparents acting as parents, one or both parents incarcerated, addicted to painkillers/alcohol, abusive homes, or just parents who have to work two jobs just to get by. My students are putting everything they have into life, and school sometimes isn't their first priority. That isn't their fault, it's just the hand they have been dealt.

My Project

I am asking for books that will appeal to their curiosity and imagination. I want a classroom library. A place that my students can go to READ, and open their minds to escape the world they currently live in. I try so hard to get my students to read, yet I understand that they aren't going to get into something unless it appeals to their interests. I have picked out books that would appeal to that boy in the back of the class who would rather listen to his music than the story we are reading in class. I want my students to LOVE to read. To find that escape from everyday drama and jump into the world an author, they will never meet, has created.

Every English teacher's dream is to have a library at their fingertips.

A place that students can freely pick up a book, read the synopsis on the back, and say, "Hey, can I read this?" as they hold it up towards you. I want to be able to give my freshmen that opportunity. I want to see them so engaged in a book that when the bell rings to go to their next class, none of them move because they would rather continue reading. You can help me achieve that. Your donation can give my students that.
