My students are bright eyed, eager to learn, freshmen who think they don't deserve anything. My students complain that no one understands them, as most high school students do, but especially these ones. I work in a school in a lower income area. My students have everything working against them. As an English teacher I would love to teach Count of Monte Cristo, but my students can't relate to that. The classics were not written for them. On top of all of this, I have more males than females in my classes. Males don't think it's cool to read. It is my hope these books will get them interested in reading.
