"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."
Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
My first graders attend a public elementary school in Northern California.
Our school is one of four TK-5 campuses in our town. We are focusing on College Readiness this year, with each classroom adopting a college. Go Wildcats!
My students enjoy visiting our classroom library, observing our class fish "Learnie" and "Fishie," indoor recess, counting to 120, and Scholastic book orders.
My Project
My students LOVE spending time in my classroom library. However, since I am a first year teacher, I am unable to offer them a diverse selection of books. The book sets will be a great addition to my currently sparse library. The more contact children have with books, the better readers they become. Having a well organized (using the Connect & Store book bins) and varied classroom library will help to foster a love of reading in my students. Interacting with books supports literacy instruction and serves as a place for students to talk about and interact with books.
The sight word rings and Words in a Flash word wall cards will be beneficial, because knowing these lists of high frequency words gives young readers a huge advantage when attempting to read new stories. In addition to word wall cards, I will display Common Core aligned "I Can" statements that will let students know their Language Arts learning objectives in kid-friendly language.
Many of my students have limited access to books at home.
This is why it is so important that I have an extensive classroom library with many books at each of my students' individual reading levels.
Please help me in creating a new group of lifelong readers!
