Classroom Library: Help Urban Students Fall in Love With Reading!

My Project
My 9th grade ELA students are in a high-poverty, urban district, and have limited access to "real" books. Though technology offers a world of virtual books, I've found that students increasingly long for the tactile feel, smell, and touch of "real" books. They are far more likely to pick up a physical book, leaf through it, and start reading, than to go online and search out an ebook. I am fortunate to have books for our curriculum, like Romeo and Juliet, or Odyssey, but these are guided literature readings. I want our classroom library to be where my students discover reading is fun, that they can read independently, and fall in love with books.

I've spent the week getting to know my 9th graders, and have created a classroom library wish list based on their interests. My students are 100% minority, but they're also 100% typical teens. Manga and graphic novels are especially really big right now! I've chosen books in a wide range of genres - thriller, YA, science fiction/fantasy, adventure, real life crime, wonders of science - based on student interest and what I know are high interest books with 5 star ratings. My goal is for them to fall in love with reading, and I plan on doing independent reading 2-3 times a week.
I know my students would be so grateful for this! And as a teacher, I know how much this will impact their entire lives. Thank you!
