My students need a classroom library to become better readers and writers. Each book is a classic or books I have previously read and can easily turn into student-led discussions.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is on the South Side of Chicago and my students are students from all over the city. Some of them take more than one bus or train to get to and from school, and others have wonderful parents who will drive more than an hour to get their students to school.
One of my students is so dedicated to keep coming to our school that he recently moved out of the city, but his mom drives him from an hour away because he loves the learning environment we give him.
All of these students have difficulties reading, writing, and social-emotionally, and I am just a social studies teacher trying to provide some extra resources to help them out!
My Project
In our school we have a wonderful Media Center/Library, however we do not have the funding to hire a full-time, or even part-time, librarian! Checking out books, when I was in high school, was essential and I always had a book with me every day to read in the off-times.
The more a student reads the better their vocabulary, writing, and understanding of experiences outside of their own gets!
The bookshelf, library cards, and pockets are all essential to make sure I know where the books are at any time, and I will have a designated student leader to help organize and remind students to bring back their books by the due date. I will also use the opportunity of a classroom library to implement a sustained silent reading time every week, and this will help students in their efforts of learning when to be quiet, how to keep reading for state tests, and the importance of a good book.
