In our school we have a wonderful Media Center/Library, however we do not have the funding to hire a full-time, or even part-time, librarian! Checking out books, when I was in high school, was essential and I always had a book with me every day to read in the off-times. The more a student reads the better their vocabulary, writing, and understanding of experiences outside of their own gets! The bookshelf, library cards, and pockets are all essential to make sure I know where the books are at any time, and I will have a designated student leader to help organize and remind students to bring back their books by the due date. I will also use the opportunity of a classroom library to implement a sustained silent reading time every week, and this will help students in their efforts of learning when to be quiet, how to keep reading for state tests, and the importance of a good book.
