Learning to read can be very challenging! Students need access to books in order to read, and our resources are very limited. Having leveled literature in classroom libraries increases individual student success. Learning to read is a lifelong gift! Please help this to happen!
My students are special education students from high poverty level backgrounds.
I will have this class for first and second grade. These students attend school in an urban setting where resources are limited and funding is scarce. Unfortunately due to budget cuts, my students do not even receive library class and our personal library is very small. Not having books that children are able to read is frustrating for all involved. They have the desire to become better readers and work very hard at it! Many of my students do not have books to read at home and cannot afford to purchase books. Most of the class reads well below grade level. That makes all the other subject areas including writing and math hard for them. Providing a leveled library in our class will help students to become confident when choosing books and will build success. Learning to read is the most important skill I can teach my students, so they can be successful in other academic areas that require reading.
Imagine picking up a book and not knowing any words on the page. This is how some students feel with the narrow selection of texts in our class currently. Now imagine being in a classroom filled with books that are leveled and "just right" for you as you are learning to read. This is how my students want to feel. If my students had a leveled library in our classroom filled with books that can reach all learners, it will increase their motivation to want to read, as well as increase their academic achievement. My students are already below grade level and need help to close the gap. Learning to read will stimulate unlimited growth and potential of these unique children. "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." quote by Dr. Seuss is inspiring to this project. If you consider helping to provide these students with books to practice becoming a better reader, just imagine "the places they will go in life" with your help!

As a teacher I want to be able to provide texts at differentiated levels to foster learning by all students in my classroom.
