My students are special education students from poverty level backgrounds. I will have this class for first and second grade. These students attend school in an urban setting where resources are limited and funding is scarce. Unfortunately due to budget cuts, my students do not even receive library class and our personal library is very small. Not having books that children are able to read is frustrating for all involved. They have the desire to become better readers and work very hard at it! Many of my students do not have books to read at home and can not afford to purchase books. Most of the class reads well below grade level. That makes all the other subject areas including writing and math hard for them. Providing a leveled library in our class will help students to become confident when choosing books and will build success. Learning to read is the most important skill I can teach my students so they can be successful in other academic areas that require reading.
