My fifth grade students are always engaged in learning. The classroom has a nice flow during the day and their is always a nice "learning buzz" of student led conversations. My students love working in small group centers where they can share ideas with one another and teach their peers.
We are an inner city urban public elementary school located in Boston's Chinatown.
We serve students who are first language non-English speakers from Asian and Hispanic backgrounds. Approximately 80% of our students are low income and do not have regular access to technology. Given this, my goal is to have my students technologically competitive when they enter middle school.
My Project
The list of benefits to including any type of technology into the classroom is literally endless, in my opinion. Since I create a classroom environment where there is a great deal of small group, center based learning, I plan to use the iPads as a daily center in the classroom to support the current learning goals and objectives. Adding iPads to the classroom will allow students to take control of their learning while using some of the latest educational applications being offered. IPads are easier to store and more accessible to the students. Since students learn at different paces and learning styles, the use of iPads will allow me to differentiate my instruction to better meet the needs of my students. As a teacher in today's day and age, I find it crucial to help my students become technologically literate.
Incorporating these five iPads into our daily routine will increase the students excitement to learn, build on their literacy of technology and allow for their learning to become more flexible and differentiated.
The dynamics of the classroom participation will change too. No longer will the class be filled of hands being raised to answer and share information, but students will be collaborating together in small groups to every lesson presented.
