Classroom Incentives for Token Economy

Help me give my students items to purchase with their CATS $$$ as part of our Classroom Token Economy to promote Positive Behavior Intervention Supports.

My Project

Over the past two years, my middle school students and I have created and implemented our own student store where they can purchase a variety of items from, "Mr. H's Secret PAW Menu". This menu is hung up in class with each item being given a specific value to purchase. Items include homework and bathroom passes, pencils, assignment boosters, lunch with a teacher, tech time, and perhaps the most sought out items, snacks and drinks. When we create the secret menu we attempt to come up with as many free or low-cost incentives as possible, however, having tangible and consumable items available has never hurt, especially with teenagers. Every item was picked and voted on by each of my students, including the value, with the headphones and numbered charts being classroom necessities for increased tech use in the classroom. Students need the headphones to listen to personalized lessons via our school-adopted intervention program and numbered charts organizing classroom materials, such as calculators and headphones.

Student engagement, motivation, and classroom culture have increased tremendously since the implementation of our classroom's PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) program and secret class incentive menu.

Students are given ample opportunities to earn PAWS (classroom dollars) by demonstrating aspects of our school's core values, Courage, Attitude (Positive), Teamwork, and Success. This can include, showing up to class on time, being in correct uniform, appropriate tech use, helping a peer, score well on a test, amongst other actions. This program has developed students' financial literacy skills and behaviors, such as saving money as well as increasing social-emotional health.
