This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from a high poverty school district. Our school has a diverse student body. All of our students are African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans. Many of my students are faced with several challenges both in the classroom and at home. Despite all the obstacles that my students face, they are still eager to learn and grow academically.
My students are from a magnet school in Camden, New Jersey.
Our school is a comprehensive four-year high school that prepares students for college. Additionally, our school gives students medical exposure so they can gain invaluable work experience in the medical field. Most of my students are now eagerly preparing for college because we are the only school within our city that has 100% college acceptance rate. My students come from one of the highest poverty cities in the nation. I also teach two classes that's project based for students with autism.
My Project
I began my teaching career as a Chinese language teacher. Over the years, my role has been modified and I currently teach a Chinese culture class to students with autism. Most of my students are non-verbal and we communicate through art expressions. In our classroom, we learn all different aspects of the Chinese culture: mythology, history, films, holidays, celebrations, art, cuisine, and so much more.
My students loves to come to my class because they get to learn the Chinese culture through project based assignments.
My students are very artistic and loves to create art projects that displays the Chinese culture. Because I am not an art teacher, I don't get much funding from school to buy supplies for my class. We always run out of supplies when we do projects. Sometimes we have really good ideas for projects but we can't do the projects without supplies. Please give my students binders so they can organize their coloring pages and books. My students also needs vinyl, yarn, glue gun and glue sticks to create a variety of projects. All of these art supplies will make a difference in my classroom.
