My Students
I teach math and English Language Arts (ELA) to two classes of Chinese immersion 6th graders. These are bright students who are preparing to participate in and contribute to a multi-cultural, global economy. My students spend half of their day learning Chinese and science from my native Mandarin speaking co-teacher, and the other half learning ELA and math concepts in my English-based classroom.
By learning to speak, read, and write Mandarin Chinese, my students are taking advantage of the best years in life to learn a second language!
Their journey to dual-language proficiency is impressive to watch--they speak with confidence and without an American accent! It is exciting to be a part of their educational journey, as I help them master math and ELA concepts.
My Project
My students will learn important English Language Arts (ELA) concepts while being introduced to a what the Wall Street Journal called, "A terrific biographical novel by Margi Preus."
While reading, students will evaluate sentence and paragraph structure, evaluate mentor sentences, learn vocabulary, understand the impact of using a hook to capture the reader's attention, and identify high-impact words.
Students don't have enough opportunities to learn from and enjoy great literature--but that will change in my classroom with the funding of this grant request! My students will be able to learn from an insightful book as we read, reflect on and discuss this compelling biographical novel.
In addition, this project will fund new books for our classroom library, and extension cords for charging student laptops.
