Welcome to my 5th Grade Classroom! My class is an advanced fifth grade classroom in an urban setting. My students come from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Over fifty percent of my students are bilingual and speak Spanish, Creole and Arabic. Besides being English language learners, my students are bright, highly motivated and dedicated to their education.

While teaching in such a diverse classroom setting has endless rewards, there are so many challenges. One difficulty I frequently encounter teaching in a large urban school system is a lack of resources, supplies and funds. Many of my colleagues must purchase classroom supplies out of their pocket to the essential supplies they need if school resources and funds are running low that particular year.

Sadly, not all schools across our country are furnished equally. My classroom has limited furniture and technology. Presently, my classroom has two small blackboards and no cork boards to display visual aids, graphs, charts, thematic units and student work. Although, content and materials are taped to our cinder block walls it often falls off. In addition, my students miss out on colorful bulletin board displays that create a stimulating and exciting classroom space. I am requesting two large cork boards that can be mounted to the classroom walls. These boards will be used to tack charts, graphs, student work and other displays to continue to foster student learning in the classroom.
