Help me give my students flexible seating, visuals, materials and activities for our classroom "coping corner," a space where they can work on identifying and shaping their emotions, and how they react to certain emotions.
I teach 10-12 year old students on the Autism Spectrum at a school that provides services to students with Autism and/or multiple disabilities that cannot be accommodated in traditional settings. Some of my students communicate verbally while others supplement their verbal communication with signs, PECS, and augmentative communication devices. Throughout the school day, we focus on developing their ability to navigate the world independently in a way that will optimize the extent to which they are able to use their own unique "voice" to advocate for themselves in different contexts.
My students are working on learning and developing strategies that help them identify both their own emotions and tools they can use in different circumstances when they experience challenging emotions, like anger and disappointment.
My Project
Students will use visual aids and materials to help identify their own emotions, what emotions are caused by certain events and consequences that follow engaging in safe and unsafe behaviors in social situations and different environments.
This classroom space will be used as a learning environment for practicing mindfulness exercises that encourage and teach students to be more aware of the physical sensations linked to emotions they experience, and an area where they can practice engaging in alternative, more socially appropriate responses when upset e.g.
taking a break instead of throwing a desk.
Students can also use the space and materials to engage in role playing and modeling activities, where they practice alternative responses to difficult emotions and provide peers with feedback regarding their own responses.
