At our school our student population is composed of a majority of Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders who live on Hawaiian Homestead. These students come from the Leeward Coast of Oahu, from Nanakuli, Maili, Waianae, and Makaha. Our students are resilient, socially responsible, and resourceful.
Feeling safe and secure, building positive relationships, and fostering a sense of belonging are a few of the important things I hope for my students when they enter my classroom daily.
Kindergarten is a place of introduction and transition into the school system and having students learn the purpose of a community is foundational. It's my role as a teacher, to help and guide them through this new environment with routines, procedures, and the skills needed for their success. For this project, we are requesting a letter tray, felt sheets, storage containers, and a variety of mini erasers. These materials will be used to provide my students with a creative and engaging approach that will foster positive behavior. It is a tool that can be incorporated in various ways, for example, it provides creative writing opportunities and can be used as prompts where students can write stories or create characters based on their desk pets which fosters imagination and their creative writing skills. Desk pets will also contribute to building a sense of community within the classroom, by having students share their desk pet experiences and creating a positive and collaborative environment. Lastly, by assigning each student their own desk pet fosters a sense of responsibility and ownership that will instill important values by teaching them to care for their pets.
